A tragic incident has come to light at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur, West Bengal. On Friday, the body of Ritam Mandal, a fourth year student of B.Tech, was found hanging from the noose in the hostel room. This is the fourth such case in the campus since January this year. An official of the institute said that 21 -year -old student, Ritam Mandal, who was studying mechanical engineering, was found hanging from the room in Rajendra Prasad (RP) Hall Hostel Building of the campus.
A student living with Ritam in the hostel said that the student, a resident of Kolkata, had gone to his room after having a meal on Thursday night and there was no abnormality in his behavior. The IIT official said that there was no response even to knocking on the door repeatedly, after which the policemen posted at the premises in the morning broke the door with the security guards of the institute and found the body hanging.
The official said that the institute lodged an FIR and full support is being given to the investigators. He said that the student’s family has been informed. IIT said in a statement, “We are saddened by informing the untimely demise of Ritam Mandal, a student of the graduate fourth year of Mechanical Engineering Department, with deep grief.”
Giving details of the incident in the statement, it was said, “Mandal was found dead in its room at Rajendra Prasad Hall of Residence on the morning of 18 July. On receiving the information, the security response team of the institute took quick action and reached the hostel premises. After this, the institute’s medical team, director, senior administrative officer and local police officers arrived. The division was also immediately approached.”
The statement claimed that no abnormalities were seen in the behavior of the young man. According to the statement, Mandal returned to the campus recently after a long summer holidays. The institute said, “Mandal started taking classes. According to the records received from the Sart Consultation Center of the institute, there have been no prior indications of any kind of mental health problem. The Department of Faculty of the department also said that no academic or non-educational problem came to their attention. The administration has started the necessary action and the necessary action as per law.” The statement said that the police has started investigating the incident and the institute is giving full cooperation to facilitate this process. According to the statement, “We (the institute) have formed a fact to investigate the incident and report as soon as possible. The entire IIT community is in deep shock with this tragic damage.”
