Big success: The team of doctors succeeded in removing tumors weighing 10.6 kg from the patient’s stomach

Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi have successfully carried out a very complex and rare surgery. The team of doctors succeeded in removing Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) weighing 10.6 kg from the patient’s stomach. The tumor was in the patient’s body for the last 8 months and gradually spread throughout the stomach.

This tumor had become so big that he had surrounded all the stomach parts and took the external vessels on both sides. Due to this, the patient had to get right hydronephrosis. This surgery was quite challenging for doctors as the tumor was connected to many important organs, ommonum and bladder dome.

This complex surgery was led by Dr. Shivani B.C. Paruthi did it. He was supported by Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Dr. Charu Bhanba (MS), HOD of Surgery Department, Dr. Kavita, and Dr. RK Chezara. The team managed to successfully remove this big tumor with mutual coordination and accurate scheme.

On the success of surgery, Dr. Sandeep Bansal said, ‘Removing such a big gist tumor is a big example of medical advancement and teamwork in our hospital. Such successful such complex surgery is the result of the surrender of the entire medical staff. We will also try to give better treatment to the patients by considering such a case as a challenge.
Gastrointestinal Stormal Tumor (GIST) is a rare type of tumor, which is produced in connective tissues of the digestive system and develops from the Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICC). After successful surgery, the patient has been discharged and now Medical Oncology Team is constantly monitoring his recovery. This operation once again proved that any complex case can be made successful by the right technology, experienced team and dedication.
