PM Modi’s response to Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation: Wishing good health

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him better health a day after he resigned as Vice President for health reasons in an unexpected development of Jagdeep Dhankhar. PM Modi said in a social media post on Tuesday that Mr. Dhankhar has got an opportunity to serve the country in many roles including the Vice President.

What did PM write
The Prime Minister said in his post that Jagdeep Dhankhar ji has got an opportunity to serve the country in many roles including the Vice President of India. I wish him good health. It is noteworthy that Dhankar suddenly resigned from his post late on Monday evening. In a resignation written to President Draupadi Murmu, he said that he is resigning from the post of Vice President due to health reasons.

Angioplasty took place recently
Dhankhar (74) took over as Vice President in August 2022 and had his term till 2027. The resignation of Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar came on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. He recently had an angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi and was admitted to the hospital for a few days in March this year. On some occasions, his condition did not look right, but he often looked energetic in public programs including Parliament. At the same time, the opposition is raising questions about the resignation of the Vice President.

Third Vice President to resign in the middle of tenure
Significantly, Jagdeep Dhankhar became the third Vice President to resign from the post on Monday. Earlier, VV Giri resigned as Vice President, who took over as the acting President after the death of the then President Zakir Hussain on 3 May 1969. At the same time, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat resigned as Vice President on 21 July 2007 after losing the presidential election against Congress -led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pratibha Patil.
