Instagram has introduced enhanced age verification measures for its users in India. This initiative aims to ensure that individuals, especially minors, engage with content appropriate for their age group. The platform now mandates users to confirm their age through specific methods, particularly when attempting to modify their date of birth from under 18 to 18 or above. The primary methods for age verification include uploading a valid identification document or submitting a video selfie. The video selfie option utilizes technology from Yoti, a company specializing in online age verification. Yoti’s system estimates a user’s age based on facial features, ensuring privacy by deleting the images after verification. This collaboration underscores Instagram’s commitment to creating a safer environment for its younger audience.

Previously, Instagram allowed users to verify their age solely by uploading identification documents, such as a driver’s license or passport. The introduction of the video selfie method offers a more accessible and user-friendly alternative, catering to those who may not possess official identification. This move is particularly pertinent in regions where access to formal identification is limited among certain age groups.

The platform had also been testing a “social vouching” method, where mutual followers could confirm a user’s age. However, Instagram has decided to remove this option temporarily to implement improvements, focusing instead on more direct verification methods.

These measures are part of Instagram’s broader strategy to ensure that teens and adults have age-appropriate experiences on the platform. By accurately determining user ages, Instagram can provide tailored content and features, enhancing safety and compliance with regional regulations. The company plans to expand these verification tests to the UK and the EU before the end of the year, reflecting its global commitment to user safety.

The importance of such measures is underscored by recent findings from the UK’s media watchdog, Ofcom, which reported that more than one-third of children aged between 8 and 17 are using various social media platforms after signing up with fake dates of birth. This highlights the challenges platforms face in ensuring age-appropriate interactions and the necessity of robust verification processes.

Instagram’s initiative in India reflects a growing recognition of the need for stringent age verification across social media platforms. By implementing these measures, Instagram aims to foster a safer online environment, ensuring that content is suitable for users’ age groups and mitigating potential risks associated with underage social media usage.
