Kaziranga National Park Seizes Weapons Linked to Rhino Poaching

Significant Seizure in Kaziranga National Park

Biswanath Chariali, Dec 2: Authorities have recovered a rifle and ammunition in the outskirts of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, close to Gohpur, on Monday.

This operation was executed by the Eastern Range, Gamari, along with the Crime Investigation Range, Panibharal, under the Biswanath Wildlife Division.

Officials suspect that the firearm was smuggled from a neighboring state for the purpose of poaching rhinos within the park, involving at least seven individuals in the scheme. On Sunday, one suspect, Biswarup Mili, also known as Dakkar Mili from Raonamukh, was apprehended and subsequently presented before the Judicial Magistrate in Gohpur, where he was granted three days of forest custody.

Additionally, four other suspects identified as R Pegu, Birgu Pegu, Bimal Pachung, and Siva Guru Pachung have also been taken into custody in relation to this case.

Dipen Pegu, another accomplice, was previously arrested for his involvement in the illegal trade of tiger bones in the Eastern Range and is currently in judicial custody. Girish Pegu has been detained for further questioning.

The operation was initiated based on intelligence reports, followed by thorough searches and interrogations, with significant assistance from local communities.

In the past ten days, a total of 12 individuals have been arrested, highlighting the forest department’s efforts in preventing poaching attempts.
