Significant Changes in IIT Placement Process
As the placement season kicks off at IIT campuses, a significant decision has emerged this year. Reports indicate that over 20 companies that abruptly rescinded job offers to students in the previous academic year have been excluded from this year’s placement process. In many instances, these offers were withdrawn just days before the joining date, causing immense mental stress and uncertainty regarding careers for the students.
According to IIT regulations, once students receive a job offer, they are typically not allowed to attend further interviews. Consequently, when companies retracted offers in June and July, many students found their futures hanging in the balance. Notably, the IIT administration conducted a joint review of these cases and discovered that some companies had withdrawn offers from multiple institutions, with similar incidents occurring in the past.
The placement teams finalized the list of these companies after cross-referencing names through coordinators from around 15 IITs. Some of these companies even employed IIT alumni, yet they still canceled offers. Moreover, in certain cases, companies attempted to reduce the previously agreed-upon salary packages. Following this, the placement cells reached out to senior officials of the concerned companies to address the students’ concerns.
Several firms in the software and data analytics sectors are included in this restricted list. While they will not be allowed to participate in the official placement process this year, they may still recruit students through off-campus methods. A student from the 2025 batch at IIT Bombay shared that a company had rescinded an offer worth approximately 30 lakh rupees just two days before joining, but with the help of the alumni network, he later secured a better opportunity.
An IIT professor mentioned that this year, the institution is also incorporating more startups supported under the central government’s ‘Developed India’ initiative. Despite a sluggish job market, early placement indicators are promising, and the institution is actively working to provide students with better opportunities.
