Show cause notice of Election Commission to 27 parties missing from elections for 6 years

The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi has taken a tough stand against 27 registered political parties. These parties have been issued a show cause notice on not contesting any election for the last six years. The Election Commission said, it is a violation of the Representation of People Act. Further, these parties can be removed from the list of Election Commission.

Officials said the presidents and general secretaries of these parties were given time to respond in writing and appear before the Chief Electoral Officer, but only four parties responded. Chief Electoral Officer R. Alice Waz said that he would send a report to the Election Commission by 27 July.

27 parties did not contest any election since 2019

According to the official, the Election Commission register under Section 29 of political parties Public Representation Act, 1951. She can participate in the election after registration. These parties are also given special discounts. In which facilities like tax exemption, election symbol and star campaigner are available. But 27 parties in Delhi have not contested any election since 2019.

Can be removed from the list of political parties
The notice states that it is clear that the party has stopped working as a political party under Section 29A for the last six years. Therefore, the Commission proposes to remove these political parties from the list under Article 324 of the Constitution of India and Section 29A of the Public Representation Act, 1951.

All the parties who have been sent notice by the Election Commission are always seen in the Lok Sabha, Assembly and Municipal Corporation elections but do not get any special votes. In the 2025 assembly elections, BJP and its associates got 47.2 percent votes, AAP got 43.6 percent and Congress got 6.3 percent votes. The rest of the national parties, non-recognized parties and independents, including only 2.4 percent votes were received.

Notice sent to these parties
The parties who have been sent notice include Bharatiya Employment Party, Jan Andolan Morcha, Manav Jagriti Manch, Navyug Party, Ojasvi Party, Rashtriya Jan Kalyan Party, Janata Sarkar Party, All India Women’s United Party and Azad Bharat Congress. The Election Officer gave the parties time to reply by 18 July.
