After the clashes that started on the border of Thailand and Cambodia on Thursday morning, there are war -like situations in both countries. Both sides have accused each other of firing. After firing soldiers on the border, Thailand has deployed fighter jet F-16 and also carried out airstrikes. The tension between the two countries has reached its peak due to the bombing of Thailand. This has created a possibility of a fierce battle in India’s neighborhood. The reason for this fight in both countries is the decades -old border dispute.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense said in its statement that Thailand has carried out airstrikes in its territory. Cambodia has reported that the Thailand army has dropped bombs on the road leading to Wat Kau Kiri Swara Pagoda from F-16 fighter jets. Thailand has claimed to launch six F-16 aircraft in battle and destroy two regional military headquarters of Cambodia. Cambodia has said that he will respond to these attacks.
How did both countries become enemies
Cambodia and Thailand are neighbors but today these southeast Asian neighboring countries are at the mouth of the war. The current tension began on May 28, when a Cambodian soldier died in a clash. The incident occurred in an area called Emerald Triangle, which is the shared range of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. The region remains constantly disputed as both Thailand and Cambodia claim parts of the region. Both countries are attacking each other since May 29.
Cambodia and Thailand share the 817 km long border. France occupied Cambodia from 1863 to 1953. In such a situation, France decided mostly the border. Its base was based on the agreement of Thailand and Cambodia in 1907. Thailand objected to this map in later years, saying that the 11th -century Preh Vihier Temple located on the Dangrek mountain was placed in Cambodia. Due to differences on the map, the areas around the border became such that both countries claim their claims.
The Thai army said that Cambodia had sent a monitoring drone to the area before deploying heavy weapons armed soldiers. He said that at least two Thai soldiers were injured in the shootout.
Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesman Mali Socheta said, ‘Our soldiers exercised their rights to protect their sovereignty and regional integrity against the attack of Thai soldiers. Thailand has violated the regional integrity of Cambodia.
What did Cambodia leaders say?
Former Cambodia leader Hun Sen said in a post on Facebook that the Thai army has opened fire on two provinces of Cambodia. In the post, he appealed to the people not to panic.
At the same time, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Facebook, “Cambodia has always expressed a desire to resolve the issues in a peaceful manner, but this time when we were attacked with weapons, we also had no option but to answer it with weapons.”
What did the Prime Minister of Thailand say?
Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Fummatham Vachayachai said that his dispute with Cambodia remains in a ‘critical situation’ and should be carefully resolved according to international law.
A day before the clash between the two countries on Thursday, Thailand called his ambassador from Cambodia. Earlier, a Thai soldier was injured in the landmine explosion on the border, causing tension between the two countries and Thailand had withdrawn his ambassador. On Wednesday, Thailand also said that it would expel the Ambassador of Cambodia from the country.
In May, a Cambodian soldier died in the armed conflict between the two countries, causing the relations between the two countries to remain tense. In the last two months, the two countries have imposed strict sanctions on each other and have increased the presence of soldiers on the border.
Case in international court
Cambodia dragged Thailand into the International Court of International Court of temple dispute in 1959 and the court ruled in 1962, saying that Preh falls in the Vihier Cambodian region. Thailand accepted it at that time but argued that the surrounding boundaries were disputed. This made the boundary lines more complicated. The tension increased in 2008, when Cambodia sought the status of UNESCO world-dore for the Preh Vihier Temple. After the temple was recognized in July, military clashes started between Cambodian and Thai soldiers near the border area.
These clashes continued continuously and reached the peak in 2011. This year 36,000 people were displaced. The military conflict stopped in the two countries but a tension continued inside. Thailand also established a Joint Border Commission (JBC) to help resolve border disputes but its meetings did not lead to any significant results. In such a situation, even after the cases of the international court and many clashes, things remain the same. In the recent weeks, he has taken it very poorly.
