New Delhi
The Election Commission has started the election process to choose the new Vice President of the country. A press note in this regard has been issued by the Commission. The Commission says that information has been received from the Ministry of Home Affairs that Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned. Now the process has been started on our behalf for elections on this post. The election date will also be announced soon. A notification for the vacancy of the post of Vice President was issued by the Home Ministry on 22 July i.e. on Monday.
In fact, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned on Monday i.e. 21 July 2025. His resignation created a stir in political circles. No one was aware that something like this would happen. The staff of Rashtrapati Bhavan himself was surprised as to why Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly came to meet the President. Jagdeep Dhankhar said that he is resigning due to priority to health, but the Congress looks like black in some dala in this decision.
The Election Commission wrote, ‘The Election Commission does the election of the Vice President under Article 324. It is directed by the President. The Election Commission has now started preparing for the election of the Vice President. Preparations are going on now and after completing it, the date of election will be announced soon. The Commission said that before announcing the date of election, we are working on some things. One of these is to prepare an electoral college. Under this, a voter list will be prepared by combining Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs. Nominated members of Rajya Sabha also have the right to vote in the Vice Presidential election.
If the MLAs of the Legislative Assembly across the country cast their votes in the President’s election, then only MPs do the work of voting in the Vice Presidential elections. Since this post has been vacated by the resignation of Dhankhar on July 21, the country should get a new Vice President by 21 January. We hope that the Election Commission will soon start its process by issuing notifications. However, assembly elections are also held in Bihar in the country by October – November.
This election is held from the ballot box
The Vice President is elected only through the Secret Ballot Box. After voting, its votes are counted. The result is declared on the same day. The Returning Officer plays the Returning Officer in the Vice President’s election.
When was the election of Vice President for the first time
For the first time in the country, the election of Vice President began in 1952 with the presidential election. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the first Vice President of the country. He held this position for two term. The tenure of the Vice President is also of five years. This election is important because the Vice President is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Vice President’s election from Parliament itself
The Vice President is elected through the proportional representation method through the Electoral College, which is formed by the members of both the houses of the Parliament. Members of both houses of Parliament participate in it and every member can cast only one vote. MLAs along with elected MPs in the presidential election also vote, but only Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs can vote in the Vice Presidential elections.
Can nominated members vote
Nominated MPs for both houses cannot vote in the presidential election but they can vote in the Vice Presidential elections. If seen in this way, 790 electorates of both houses will take part in the Vice Presidential election.
Rajya Sabha – Selected Members: 233, Nominated Member: 12
Lok Sabha – Selected Members: 543, Nominated Member: 2
Total Electoral: 790
So what is the vote equation this time
At present there are 542 MPs in the Lok Sabha, while the Rajya Sabha will have 240 i.e. total votes 782. It will be the majority mark 392. The NDA has 427 MPs (293 in the Lok Sabha and 134 in the Rajya Sabha, including 10 nominated members. The opposition has 355 MPs in both houses (249 in Lok Sabha and 106 in Rajya Sabha). This means that any candidate who has been raised for this post from NDA will win comfortably.
present situation
Rajya Sabha – Member: 240 Nominated Members: 10
Lok Sabha – Member: 542
Total Electoral Members: 782
Majority to win – 392
What is the proportionate method in voting
The election election for the post of Vice President is done with the proportional representation. In this, voting is done in a special way, which is called single transformed vote system.
- – In this, the voter has to vote only one vote, but he has to decide the priority on the basis of his choice.
- – He gives his first choice 1, 2 to the second choice 2, 2 and so on the candidates present on the ballot paper.
- How many proposer and supporter with the candidate
- – To stand in the election, any person has to nominate at least 20 Parliament members as proposals and at least 20 members of Parliament as supporters.
- – Bail amount of Rs 15,000 who has been a candidate as Vice President has to be deposited.
- After the nomination, the Election Officer again examines the nomination papers and the names of eligible candidates are included in the ballot.
Eligibility for Vice President’s post
Only if a person will be a Vice President, only if
- 1. Be a citizen of India
- 2. Have completed the age of 35 years
- 3. He fulfills the abilities to be selected for the Rajya Sabha.
- 4. He should be a voter of parliamentary constituency in that state or union territory
- 5. A person who holds a post of profit under the Government of India or under a State Government or under a subordinate local authority is also not eligible for it.
Counting also differently
It is first seen that all the candidates have got how many votes with the first priority. Then the first priority votes are added to all. The total number is divided by 2 and 1 is added to the quotient. Now the number that is found is considered the quota which is necessary for a candidate to stay in counting.
If in the first count, a candidate gets equal to the quota or more votes for victory, then it is declared victorious. If this is not possible, the process is carried forward. First of all, the candidate is excluded from the election race to get the least votes in the first count.
But in the votes that give him the first priority, it is seen who has been given the second priority. Then these second priority votes are transferred to other candidates. If these votes get equal or more than the number of votes of a candidate, then that candidate is declared victorious.
If no candidate is chosen even at the end of the second round, then the process continues. The lowest vote candidate is excluded. The ballot papers that give him the first priority and the ballot papers received during the second counting are re -examined and it is seen who has given the next priority to them.
Then that priority is transferred to the candidates concerned. This process continues and the candidates who get the lowest vote will continue to be excluded until the number of votes received by one candidate is equal to the quota.
If the Vice President is a member of a House
The Vice President is not a member of any House of Parliament or any House of the Legislature of any state. If a member of a House of Parliament or a member of a House of the Legislature of a State is elected as Vice President, then he has to give up his membership of the House.
What are the responsibilities
Although the constitutional responsibilities of the Vice President are very limited, but apart from becoming the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, his responsibility definitely becomes important, while the post of President is empty due to some reason, then this responsibility is to be fulfilled by the Vice President only because the post of the President cannot be kept empty. By the way, the President is at the top of the protocol of our country and then the Vice President. After this the Prime Minister’s number comes
How many days should elections be held
It is necessary to hold elections within 60 days of completion of the term of the Vice President. For this, the Election Commission appoints an Election Officer who is mainly the Secretary General of one House. The Election Officer issues public notes regarding the election and asks for nominations from the candidates.
